Home Server Update

Been a while I know since I posted but what with university study and family life the blog has taken a back seat.

An update since my earlier post on WHS.

I opted for a 1.3TB system running 2 gig of DDR 667 on an Asus MOBO. All the drives are SATA2 and there are 2 x 500 gig and 1 x 320 gig that form the storage pool.

I did have some initial problems with DHCP dll’s seemingly becoming corrupt which lead to a few re installs but since then it’s been smooth sailing and the 5 pc’s on my home LAN that I have configured with the whs connector software now wake up each night between midnight and 3am and a differential backup is taken by the server.

I’m using my Xbox 360 as a media center extender and stream movies and music from the whs with media sharing enabled.

Remote access is also good with whs managing the dynamic IP assigned by our ISP and resolving it back to the homeserver.com domain name I have set up.

I have yet to try full remote control of pc’s on the home lan via remote access but plan to do so in the near future.

All in all very happy and well worth the time to build the box and the peace of mind we have now our data is stored on this platform.
