Napier Gunman

image - police aosIn a week where we were all fixated on the never ending news story that was the gunman holed up in his Napier home we forget just how common place this type of event is in other parts of the world.

I noted that the story made little mention in the online coverage of major news organisations beyond our shores.

Sure there was reporting of the event on BBC and CNN but the items were brief to say the least – perhaps indicative of how common such events are reported in mainstream media.

Now the public focus will turn to the inevitable and reoccurring debate as to weather the New Zealand Police force should be armed as a matter of routine. I hope this event is not the tipping point.

My thoughts go out to the many people impacted by this event. From the families who lost a loved one to the households pock marked with bullet holes.

Some may argue that drugs (p??) were at the root of this event. I don’t think it’s that simple. This was an individual clearly haunted by other demons for some considerable time.

My guess is that a combination of several key things conspired to set him and our country down a path everyone would have preferred not to have discovered.
