Blogging & hours in the day

Phew.. there seems to be not enough hours in the day right now.

Perhaps this is just a stage we all have to go through from time to time and it’s my turn – ok I’ve had my fun can I get off this bus now?

As time permits I hope to blog a bit more over the coming weeks about my experiences with Office 2010 and Windows 7 RTM (Release to Manufacture) the former I am about to install the latter I have been using for a few days with thanks to my friends at Microsoft.

A quick plug for Windows Home Server OS too while I’m banging on about Microsoft.

I use a WHS to store family pics, music etc and backup each night all of our home PC’s so if the kids fry a box by accident one day it’s not the end of the world as I can slip in a DVD and restore an image of their system to a new HDD complete with registered OS after an hour or so of restore time.

A few days back I had a 500 gig drive fail in my WHS. Cause for panic I hear you say? No. The OS was set to mirror files across several drives – no data was lost and the multiple redundancy saved the day again.

What’s more the ease at swapping out a dead drive and adding a new 1TB drive to the pool was easy beyond belief.

I like this OS, the concept of a family friendly home server, and the ease at which my kids can now gain access to Mum & Dads somewhat suspect 80′s music collection without risk of destroying our CD’s!

  • Hi Paul, are you using wireless or wired for your networking. Just wondering as I’ve found that trying to stream media over a wireless connection can sometimes bring everything to a standstill. I’m keen to set up a home server, but would prefer to have it all wireless, but don’t want to spend all the money setting it up and discovering it is far to slow! Dene

    • Hi Dene,

One PC in the house is wireless but the rest is wired Cat5E which was running 10/100 but just upgraded to a gigabit switch. That said a combo of wired and wireless works fine and the backups are differential so over a wireless 50 odd megabit connect a backup may only take 3-5 mins.
