Who needs friends when you can have followers?
That’s the question asked by Andrew Long aka socialspace. Andrew is a lecturer at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand based in the Information Science department. I came across these slides from a recent presentation he gave at IR10 conference in Milwaukee, USA via Twitter. Tim Spalding – Lianza Keynote – Day 3
Tim was an engaging and entertaining speaker who ran the audience through the various features available on his ever-popular website LibraryThing. The power of harnessing user generated content using collaborative effort and aided by easy to use online tools was obvious to all. Jessica spoke of her involvement with the programmes and efforts of the early 2000’s to roll out internet and information access to locations across the USA using public libraries. During her talk she spoke about the challenges of working with tribal cultures and technical connectivity. Penny Carnaby – Lianza Keynote – Day 3
Day three got off to a great start with an engaging talk by Penny Carnaby who spoke of ‘citizen created content powering the knowledge economy’. Penny laid out the challenge to librarians in attendance to ensure New Zealanders were not part of the ‘delete generation’ and to work proactively to preserve and enhance the digital cultural heritage of the country.
