Should I stand or should I go?
The weekend has arrived and I’m playing with WordPress themes again.
I can’t seem to find one I totally like but will spend some time on one or two themes that interest me to see if I can’t customize a solution that works.
To be honest the customisation and tweaking of templates is sometimes more fun than the generation of the content they encapsulate.
I suspect it’s because I spend quite a bit of my working week publishing and developing content – mucking about with themes offers a nice change of scene from that.
Asides the WordPress ‘learn by doing’ I’ve managed a nice forty minute walk today. Why? Where did this burst of physical enthusiasm come from I hear you ask? Well…
I started the day reading an item online about the benefits of standing up while working.
The gist of it was people are not built to sit about, computer work sedately at desks is bad, some USA workers have moved to standup workstations, some had even installed a treadmill to walk on whilst working – the last bit had me thinking too much as I read it.
This got me thinking about when I worked in radio and how a number of studios I worked in over the years were set up in a stand up format but furnished with stools or chairs you could use to sit on elevated near the console.
In most cases I have to say I went for the sit down option as standing up for 4-6 hours at a time I personally found physically demanding and somewhat distracting from the on-air performance task at hand.
Still, there were a number of people I worked with, and some that I can think of currently in the industry who swore by the standup layout of a broadcast studio.
I think they felt more able to express themselves verbally by being better able to express themselves physically (if they wanted to sight unseen) while talking on the air – let’s face it it’s harder to get too happy and excited while sitting down.
I guess it’s a case of horses for courses.
While I’m not seriously considering a stand all day option for my work space in the near future I was quite happy to pound the pavement today for the best part of an hour instead.
I guess you could call it my homage to stand up office workers wherever they are in the world.
