eBooks eReaders and getting our language right

After working on an eBooks and eReader FAQ recently I’ve become aware of just how important the consistent use of descriptive language associated with this space will be to helping people come to grips with it all.

Case in point are we all talking about devices (electronic equipment that enables an eBooks  to be read) when we discuss dedicated eReaders, laptops, smartphones etc. or are we using other terms interchangeably during our conversations with the customer?

Devices, eBooks, eBook formats, DRM, applications – are all foundation terms that should be understood and used consistently by GLAM professionals when engaging with our customers.

My fear is that if we do not do this we risk confusing ourselves as much as the customers we seek to serve during this transformative era.

Why not spend some time this coming week to look at the key terminology and ensure you are ‘on message’both  with the eBook platform of your choice and the profession you are part of.

  • I agree Paul and if we are not clear about what we are trying to convey then our users will switch off. So will Staff when we are trying to train and up-skill them.

  • Excellent list, Paul
