2012 is shaping up to be an interesting and exciting year – and I don’t mean all that Mayan hype!

I’m starting the month by moving from the Dunedin Public Libraries marketing team and joining the Dunedin City Council’s web team.

The web team has in turn been incorporated in to a council wide communications and marketing team as part of some internal restructuring undertaken at the end of 2011.

While I’ll still look after the DPL website and the libraries online services I envisage my new role will include a broader portfolio of online work than ever before and require a greater mix of content management and website development skills. It should be a lot of fun and I expect to learn lots of new skills this year.

On the professional development side of things I’m heading off to my first Webstock mid February and thereafter flying to Sydney to take up my two week Paul Reynolds ‘No Numpties’ Scholarship posting at the Powerhouse Museum.

Both events I’ve been eagerly anticipating as they will stretch my brain and involve some good learning opportunities along the way.

As I write this blog post I’m still on holiday so it’s with a degree of effort that I focus my thoughts to pound this out.

One of the nice things about being away from the regular routines of life is that you can let your mind wander and focus on stuff that interests you at the time.

I have found I’ve been engaging in my old Amateur radio hobby again (erected an inverted V 80 meter diople this week) and have been chatting to fellow HAM radio operators around New Zealand in the evenings on my HF gear.

New Year’s resolutions are slippery things don’t you think?

We make them with the best of intentions but by month three they have gone down the drain.

So I start this year with little in the way of firm intentions other than to follow my passions of technology, marketing and communications and new learning.

I also have a strong desire to spend quality time with family and friends and above all else remember that life is for living and not to take things too seriously for most things are not THAT important when you look back and reflect on them with the passage of time.

What ever your plans are for this year I hope you can realise at least a few of them before 2013 rolls around.
