Building Websites

I’m knee deep at the moment working on a new website for my employer and the amount of content to publish and layout can be quite overwhelming at times.

That said the last few weeks have been an enjoyable (albeit steep at times) learning curve for me using the CMS I’m building the site with.

I have posted before about this software called MySource Matrix.

This continues to be a very versatile bit of kit in terms of what I am trying to achieve with the site – each day I’m finding new ways to do cool stuff with it.

Things are certainly getting busier for me.

Last week I started going to the gym again (after many years hiatus) and that’s proving a useful unwind after a full on day in front of the screen.

Next month my University studies kick in again for another semester.

The holidays feel like they happened long ago now :-)

New Year – New Endevours

I’m just back from a few days camping with my family.

While away I’ve been pondering what 2010 will bring to my life.

I guess the real answer to that is what will I choose to do (or not) during this year.

I could share my new years resolutions with you but I’m not going to – sorry :-)

What I can say for sure is that most things worth having take hard work and perserverance.

In that regard I’m in for a busy 2010

Sunshine & Portability

I’m composing this blog entry using an app on my iPhone while sitting in Dunedin’s Octagon in the lunchtime summer sun.

It is now so easy these days to share your thoughts online from whereever.

I now tweet and post multiple status updates daily without a second thought.

My Iphone and it’s “always on” Internet connectivity – I can’t imagine being without.

As a “news junkie” my days of watching tv news or listening to the radio at the top of the hour are long gone.

By the time I get home tonight I’ll be able to share the days key events with my family during dinner conversation well before any free to air tv news bulletin at six o’clock.

It’s an immediacy I like but lament that some seem happy to either ignore or refuse to consider the changing information consumption paradigm.

What further changes to internet technology and online consumption of info will 2010 bring?

What ever does appear – I’m keen to adopt it!

OK I’m showing my age but I found this on YouTube today and had an ‘oh wow’ moment.

I can recall watching this movie as a kid and thinking at the time it was actually going to happen one day.

Well I was wrong (as far as I know) but the fact that such a cool computer generated movie was on the big screen as I grew up did influence and grow my fascination with all things computing.

Some time ago I recall posting to this blog a similar story about a 1983 TV series called Whiz Kids… Richie and his mates on BMX bikes with the aid of his home computers solving crimes!

The question now is… what telly programmes (or should I really be saying YouTube clips!) will be the same sort of influences on the kids of today?

Wordpress 2.9

After updating my blog software to this latest release I have to say I’m very happy with it.

There have been a few nice extra features added and a bunch of bug fixes as well.

If you have not updated your blog software for a while I suggest you download this version and act now!

Christmas 2009

It’s that time of the year again.

The word SALE is everywhere around town and most folks I see out and about are looking very frazzled.

You do have to wonder when the right time to head out the door and bag a bargain really is?

Boxing day sales seem to me to be a joke.

Yes I’m sure there are a few loss leader bargains to be had but for most I think folks are deluded in their quest to save a few $$$ on Dec 26th.

My hunch – wait until February / March when retailers are really looking to make their budgets at a time when most consumers are reeling from their Christmas credit hangovers.

Hello & Goodbye

I had the good fortune to attend my grandfathers 99th birthday party a few days ago.

The event brought members of my extended family together in one room in ways that usually only births, deaths and weddings can only do.

I’m fortunate to be able to add to the above list 99th birthdays!

It’s been great to catch up with folks and renew aquaintances – the older I get, the more comfortable and appealing such gatherings get.

It’s always sad to say goodbye at the end but it’s great to have the memories of the encounter with you for life.
